Kenya Oolong Tinderet

Region: Kenya is noted for black CTC teas - strong and coloury and destined for a million teabags available at a supermarket near you.  Even black orthodox teas are very rare from Kenya, and an oolong tea is ever scarcer.

Tinderet is a small 727 acre tea garden in the Nandi region, north of Kericho, at an elevation of 7,000 ft. owned by the 140 year old Williamson Tea Company.

For tasting the 2.8 grams of tea was steeped in 140ml water at 85⁰C for five minutes.

 Leaf: untidy flaky leaf, mixed green and brown, lacking oolong “style” or “make”

Infusion – aroma: a clean, light fermented aroma, with a hint of character volatiles.

Liquor – visual: clear bright pale amber liquor

Liquor – taste: smooth, light, slightly astringent taste, with a hint of lemon, but without an oolong character, either green or roasted.

Summary: not a typical Asian oolong but if you can suspend judgement you will discover this Tinderet is a very pleasant light African tea – well worth a try as an afternoon tea.
